Our Vision

The Environmental Studies Program advances research, teaching, and service to address the critical dimensions of environmental change. We are teacher-scholars engaged in producing the next generation of solution-oriented environmental professionals.

Our Program

The Environmental Studies Program at 爆料社区 provides students with an educational experience that bridges the social and physical sciences. We foster creative and collaborative academic excellence through applied learning and engaged research. We are a problem-solving, skill-building, career-oriented, and inclusive program empowering the next generation of environmental leaders in San Diego County and beyond. Whether you have a passion for conservation, policy, sustainability, or social justice, you鈥檒l find your place here.

As an applied and solution-focused program, our curriculum centers on experiential learning, collaboration, critical thinking, social justice, and career preparation. We pride ourselves on nurturing inclusive spaces designed for the next generation of environmental leaders.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Environmental Studies Program is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. We approach environmental problems as complex human-environmental systems that require an understanding of the natural and social sciences. We measure our success by how well we teach and engage our students in their learning, research, and outreach with the university and in their communities. Our Environmental Studies curriculum focus on integrating science, policy, and values to solve critical problems that are both social and environmental. To achieve this, we frame environmental problems toward inclusiveness, fairness, justice, and equal opportunity. We recognize that the good intentions of research have also historically not benefited the most vulnerable communities and we work to actively challenge this trend. As a solution-oriented program, we vigorously work to include and center different perspectives, values, and lived experiences into our teaching and research. Our pursuit of inclusive excellence is embedded in our ideals of fairness, justice, and dignity. We apply these ideals to our study of environmental problems and by looking inward at our structure, standards, pedagogies, policies, curriculum, and procedures.

Black Lives Matter

In the spirit of the countless social movements that have come before us, with all those who have taught us about justice, dignity, and perseverance, we stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and all those (too) many others killed before them are violent reminders of the continuing legacy of racism in the United States, the institutionalization of white supremacy, and the need for structural transformation. Despite centuries of struggle for the basic human dignity of people of color in this country, we are still in a place where once again millions of voices, including ours, must clamor for recognition of what should already be a given, that BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Environmental Studies is a discipline born out of a social movement to improve our quality of life. Our efforts must extend beyond the conservation of open spaces or the preservation of endangered species.  Environmental problems disproportionately impact people of color and will never be satisfactorily addressed while embedded in a racially unjust system. Racism disrupts our efforts to both build an equal and just society and to save the planet. As Naomi Kline so aptly puts it, to 鈥渃hange everything, we need everyone.鈥

Land Acknowledgment

The Environmental Studies Program acknowledges that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Luise帽o/Pay贸mkawichum people. Today, the meeting place of 爆料社区 and its surrounding areas is still home to the six Luise帽o/Pay贸mkawichum federally recognized bands of the La Jolla, Pala, Pauma, Pechanga, Rincon, Soboba and one non-federally recognized, the San Luis Rey band. It is also important to acknowledge that this land remains the shared space among the Kuupangaxwichem/Cupe帽o and Kumeyaay and Ipai peoples.
