This further enhances and promotes transparency and accountability while building trust and engagement with our campus community. We hope by increasing community awareness of crime trends this will lead to a collaborative effort with law enforcement to reduce crime.

AB 48-Kinetic Energy Projectile and Chemical Agents Used for Crowd Control Purposes

Effective January 1, 2022, AB 48 amended Penal Code 16352 to ban the use of kinetic energy projectiles and chemical agents by law enforcement agencies to disperse any assembly, protest, or demonstration, except by officers who have received proper training in their uses to defend against a threat to life or serious bodily injury to any individual (including a peace officer), or to bring an objectively dangerous and unlawful situation safely and effectively under control. Uses must adhere to certain requirements as defined by AB 48. �� Police is required to publish reports on each incident within 60 days of the incident.

AB 485-Hate Crimes

Office of the Attorney General requires all law enforcement agencies in California to submit hate crime event reports to the Department of Justice and requires the Department of Justice to make an annual public report with the information obtained from local law enforcement. AB 485 adds an additional provision to this law, requiring each local law enforcement agency to post the information it is required to report to the DOJ to the agency’s own website on a monthly basis.

Clery Crime Log

In compliance with the Clery Act and , the University Police Department maintains a Crime Log. The purpose of the Crime Log is to record all criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to the campus police. The Crime Log includes specific information about criminal incidents, not crime statistics, and is not an all-inclusive police activity report. The Crime Log includes the following five informational items:

Information that may likely jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual, cause a suspect to flee or evade detection, or result in the destruction of evidence, will be temporarily withheld from this report until the above referenced is no longer likely to occur from the release of this information. Crimes for which the disclosure is prohibited by law or the disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim are not included. The Crime Log is open to public inspection, free of charge, upon request, during normal business hours at the University Police Department.
